Lets talk about good food. For those of us already trying to avoid processed food there's still the "expensive" organic vs "cheap" pesticide debacle. Personally I'm tired of talking about the "problems", lets talk about solutions.
1. Grow your own. "Yeah right!" you say. Fair enough but its the most obvious and "hardest" option. If you are still interested look up "square foot garden" or for the techies "aquaponics".
2. Buy Organic. "Its expensive" Buy form farmers markets. They are closed most of the year. Fair enough.
3. Use organic grocery delivery services they range between $30-100 a week. I dont know about you but I spend way more than that on food. Bell peppers are like $10 now
The truth is that the quality of what you eat is FAR more important than how much you eat.⠀
There has only been one study done that showed no difference between organic and conventional produce. It was funded by the food and agriculture industry. ⠀
A 2015 study funded by the EPA found that consumers who often or always bought organic had significantly less insecticides in their urine, even though they ate 70 percent more produce than people who bought only conventionally grown fruits and vegetables.⠀
I know this all sounds scary, but you can greatly lower your exposure to pesticides by eating organic or by avoiding the foods sprayed with the most pesticides as much as possible. ⠀
If we buy in-season produce at farmers’ markets from small local
growers, we probably also wind up eating healthier food and we can also use the research done by the Environmental Working Group to guide us.⠀
